Shortlisted for 2026 Brick Awards, Individual Housing Development!

Cobham House is a contemporary replacement dwelling in Surrey designed to respond sensitively to its established residential setting while providing a flexible and enduring family home.

The project combines a calm masonry form, carefully proportioned elevations, and refined brick detailing to create a contemporary house rooted in permanence, craftsmanship, and material integrity.

Set within a quiet cul-de-sac characterised by detached homes on generous plots, Cobham House was designed to feel both contextual and contemporary. The 2.5-storey form references the scale and proportions of the surrounding architecture while avoiding direct historical imitation.

A restrained palette of brick and stone, combined with deep openings and carefully composed elevations, gives the house a calm and ordered presence within its setting.

Flemish bond brick detailing with lime mortar at Cobham House

A robust masonry envelope was fundamental to the architectural concept, creating a simple brick form defined by depth, texture, and permanence. The sand faced Lindfield Yellow Multi brick introduces subtle tonal variation, while Flemish bond brickwork adds richness and detail across the elevations.

Carefully considered detailing, including flush stone sill bands, concealed gutters, and lime mortar pointing, reinforces the material integrity of the project without relying on applied decoration.

The rear elevation adopts a more informal architectural language, anchored by a substantial brick chimney and a dramatic cutaway corner opening the living spaces onto the garden terrace. Internally, brick continues through selected spaces to provide warmth and material continuity.

The building fabric was designed to exceed current performance standards, with masonry construction providing thermal stability, durability, and long-term sustainability. Locally sourced materials and lime mortar construction further support the project’s low-maintenance and low embodied energy approach.
