This refurbishment project includes a change of use from office to residential, forming 14 new apartments. The existing building forms part of a local shopping centre close to the centre of Oxford.
The scheme includes the removal of the existing concrete panels and glazing from the external envelope of Westway House, replacing them with a new curtain walling system. The new composition is conceived as a lightweight glass box, which utilises the existing structure, cantilevering over the ground and first floor accommodation. The new curtain-walling module is derived from the existing structural grid, which has been refined with elegant proportions.
The façade will be composed of glazed openings and obscured glass spandrel panels to create a uniform appearance. A new lightweight frame will be attached to the existing structure to support solar shading and balconies, with glass guarding, to the South East and North West elevations. The existing stair and lift core will be re-clad in Polyester Powder Coated Aluminium panels distinguishing it from the main building.
