The new single storey dwelling has been informed by the designs of Glen Murcutt and Aldington and Craig by utilising a simple sliding plan to articulate the building into two distinct parts.
A South facing monopitch form houses the bedrooms and bathrooms and provides the ideal orientation for the PV solar thermal panels, which provide hot water and electricity. The Northern element accommodates the kitchen and reception room under an intensive green roof. The Juxtaposition of these two forms creates a natural entrance to the house and provides gentle transitions between the inside an out.
The practice has been developing this plan type some time as part of a number of intimate courtyard developments , which include 2 and 4 bedroom options.
The house is designed to achieve a local authority sustainable design ‘A’ rating, promoting a sustainable and affordable approach to backland development. The new house will provide much sought after family accommodation, which is fully wheelchair accessible and energy efficient.
Planning consent has been obtained and at the planning committee the design was commended by Councilors as an excellent example of modern design with significant ecological benefits.
